About the SS Yongala Wreck
The S.S. Yongala wreck is located within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and enjoys protection under the Historic Shipwreck Act (1976). This remarkable site is adorned with artefacts, teeming marine life, and diverse corals, making it a truly spectacular sight.
The S.S. Yongala, a 110-meter vessel, tragically sank during a cyclone on March 23rd, 1911, losing all 122 people on board. Remarkably, it wasn’t until 1958 that divers first explored the wreck. Due to its remote location, it has remained largely undisturbed. The wreck’s depth ranges from 15 metres below the surface to 29 metres.
The S.S. Yongala dive site is exceptional because it is the region’s sole substantial reef structure. This uniqueness attracts an abundance of marine life, earning it a reputation as Australia’s premier dive site. Everything here is on a grand scale, from the sizable fish and impressive schools to the substantial wreck itself, providing an exhilarating experience. Divers often encounter turtles, sea snakes, giant trevally, Queensland gropers, eagle rays, manta rays, sharks, and thousands of tropical fish. During the cooler months, humpback whales grace the area with their presence.
